Ottoman beds have gone from a niche choice to one of the most searched bed types in the UK — and it’s easy to see why. If you’re short on bedroom storage but don’t want a bed that looks like it belongs in a budget hotel, an ottoman gives you the best of both worlds. Here’s what you need to know before you buy, plus three of our current favourites.
Why Choose an Ottoman Bed?
The whole point of an ottoman bed is the storage. The mattress and base lift up on a smooth gas mechanism to reveal a large compartment underneath — typically around 1,000 litres on a king size. That’s enough for spare duvets, pillows, suitcases and anything else you want out of sight. Unlike a divan with drawers, you don’t need clear floor space on the sides to access it — just stand at the foot of the bed and lift.
They also look good. Modern ottoman beds come in velvet, linen and faux leather finishes with padded headboards that give any bedroom an instant upgrade. You’d never know from looking at one that there’s a storage room hiding underneath.
What to Watch Out For
Not all ottoman beds are built equally. The gas lift mechanism is the most important thing to check — a good one should feel effortless and hold the mattress firmly open without you having to prop it. Cheaper models can feel stiff, drop unexpectedly or wear out within a year or two.
Also check which direction the bed opens. Most open from the foot end, which is fine for most rooms. If your bed is against a wall at the foot end, look for a side-opening model instead.

Which Size is Right for You?
Ottoman beds are available in all standard UK sizes from single through to super king. A double works well for most couples in a standard bedroom, while a king gives you noticeably more sleeping space without needing a huge room. Super king is the ultimate comfort choice but you’ll need a room at least 4 metres wide.
